Nice read, but very predictable and at times the storyline in the present time was a bit flat and unimaginative. Maybe it is because I belong to a younger generation and did not grow up in the USA, but it was very hard for me to relate to the present-time female protagonist of the story. She seemed so naive, almost like a teenager, and in my opinion served too many cliches. I find the unreflected white, rich, forty, stay-at-home mom and wife of a doctor living in Northampton a bit outdated, and lacking depth.I however enjoyed the storyline taking place in the 13th century quite a bit. Except for a few incidences when I cringed at the choice of modern and colloquial language used when describing a 13th century conversation or scene, I was fascinated by the lives of Sham and Rumi and all the characters they encountered. I thought their story was nicely worked out and I was eager to finish reading in order to find out how their story ends.All in all, a enjoyable read.
I didn't chose this book, it was chosen for me. I usually read a lot more non-fiction than fiction, but this pulled my heartstrings. I was really, really doubtful at first, but once I knew who was who (the book is told from numerous perspectives) it was a fast and easy read.A story about different kinds of love. The love of lovers, the love you feel for God, the love of parents for their children. (And even if you don't have a religion or a different kind of God, you get the message: You can still get Rumi.) Great story about two different cultures at two different periods of time. All in all, very reconciling.
es ist mein erstes Buch dieser Autorin. Toll geschrieben und sehr spannend, dieser vielschichtige Roman, aus verschiedenen Perspektiven erzählt. man muss sich in eine ganz andere Welt und Denkweise hineinversetzen, um dieses Buch auf sich einwirken zu lassen. Auf jeden Fall eine tolle Lektüre, die zum Nachdenken inspieriert.
I loved reading this book. So much truth in there, so much love. I love Rumi and being thrown into his time was a great way to get an understanding of him and Sufism. There are a few events in the book that seem a bit far fetched, but overall I really loved the story and how Shafak weaves spiritual truths into it. I highly recommend this book.
Ich würde dieses Buch insbesondere spirituell orientierten Lesern empfehlen. Es ist durch die verschiedenen Perspektiven aus denen der Hergang berichtet wird, aber auch für die interessant, die einfach eine interessante, gut erzählte Geschichte aus dem Orient genießen möchten. Das einzige, was mir nicht gefällt, ist das Titelbild, das wahrscheinlich dafür sorgt, dass ausschließlich Frauen zu diesem Buch greifen werden. Dabei ist die Geschichte der Liebe zwischen Rumi und seinem spirituellen Lehrer Shams für alle gleichermaßen spannend.

How was I to know that I find myself in the role of Ella...At the same time that I was learning a lot about the fourty rules, I was learning a lot about myself and my life andIt supported my letting go of my old role after 29 years of marriage... To at last free myself of ties I have actually put onmyself... Thank you for this incredible experience...

Ein feiner vergleich, ob die Liebe zu Partnern oder Freunden, innig ist der Bund auf geheimste weise und intim bei beiden. Aufjedenfall weiterzuempfehlen.Ein makel, nur teilweise entsprechen die Figuren von Shams und Rumi der Wahrheit. Nach Autobiographie der beiden, berührten die beiden keine Frauen, die nicht ihre eigene war, und die Liebe zwischen Shams und Kimya war innig und voller Liebe, jedoch auf anderer Ebene und Hemisphären.
Wow. Dieses Buch hat mich in die Freundschaft Shams und Rumi verlieben lassen. Der Inhalt ist einfach nur spannend und die parallele Welt Rumis und Shams ist mir etwas ganz Neues gewesen. Seit dem lese ich Elif Shafaks Bücher sehr gerne und habe mir schon einige angelegt 😊
